Extremely Disappointed I normally don’t like leaving negative reviews, but my experience with Sunset Automotive in Modesto was extremely disappointing. I dropped my car off in November 2024 for a block rebuild and a stuck VTEC pin in the cylinder head. I didn’t get my car back until November 2025 — an entire year later. Throughout that year, communication was terrible. I would sometimes go weeks without a call back. Multiple times I asked to pick up my car, but the owner would insist and even beg me to give him more time. Since my car was already apart, I felt like I had no real choice but to wait. When I finally got my car back, I found multiple issues that should have been caught before it was returned the block was still leaking oil, a distributor bolt was missing, my fairly new front bumper and grille had chipped paint, there were exposed wires, and the intake manifold wasn’t properly torqued down. It felt like the car was simply put back together rather than properly finished and inspected. To make matters worse, it hasn’t even been a full year since I got the car back and I’m already having issues with the piston rings. I don’t drive the car hard and haven’t even driven

Thank you to this team! My wife and 2 kids were traveling through Modesto on the 99 South when their alternator went down and got them stranded. The folks at Sunset were super kind to them, got a new alternator and a new timing belt installed fast at an extremely fair price!! They even drove my family to the nearest coffee shop to wait until the work was completed! Super nice, super quick, and super fair price!! I wish I could give them 10 stars!!!

I went to Sunset Automotive is an amazing place with such friendly people.Tess, the service advisor, is truly the best! Tess is kind and professional, I highly recommend Sunset Automotive. especially Tess!

5 Stars – One of the Best Around! Sunset Automotive took incredible care of both me and my car. From the moment I walked in, I felt like more than just another customer. The team was honest, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done right. They explained the repairs clearly, kept me updated, and didn’t try to upsell anything unnecessary. My car runs better than ever, and the peace of mind they gave me was priceless. If you’re looking for a shop that’s trustworthy, skilled, and truly cares, Sunset Automotive is hands-down one of the best around. Highly recommended!

My husband and I have taken all of our vehicles here for the past 5 years. We’ve always had great customer service from the front desk and the mechanics. Any item that was fixed by them has been reliable and not overpriced. As a woman coming to a mechanic can be intimidating so having a place to go that makes you feel comfortable asking questions is a big deal. I don’t anticipate going anywhere else for mechanic service.
